Privacy Policy
No accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking. Nothing about you or your Mac leaves your Mac, because the app has no way to send it anywhere.
CableScope runs in the macOS App Sandbox and requests exactly one capability:
com.apple.security.app-sandbox. It does not request
com.apple.security.network.client, the entitlement an app needs to make
any outgoing network connection.
Without that entitlement macOS refuses the connection at the system level. This is not a policy we could quietly change in an update without you noticing: an app's entitlements are part of its signature, visible to Apple during review and inspectable on your own machine.
CableScope answers questions about the USB-C and Thunderbolt ports on your Mac — what speed a connection settled on, what the cable says it can do, whether the cable is the thing holding a device back. To do that it reads the macOS IOKit registry, a description of the hardware attached to your computer that the system already maintains.
It reads that registry and nothing else. Specifically, it never touches:
| Your settings | Text size, appearance, whether to show explanations, and the other switches in Settings. Stored in your Mac's own preferences, in your user account. Never transmitted. |
|---|---|
| Nothing else | The app keeps no history, no log of what you have plugged in, and no record of your hardware between launches. |
If you turn on “Tell me when something needs attention”, CableScope asks macOS for permission to show you a notification when a cable is limiting a device you have just connected. Those notifications are produced and shown entirely on your Mac. Nothing is sent to a server to generate them, and we cannot see them.
CableScope has menu items that open a web page in your browser — this site, for example. Opening a link hands the address to your browser; from that point your browser's own privacy behaviour applies, not the app's. The app itself still makes no connection.
CableScope collects no personal information from anyone, of any age.
If the app ever gains a capability that changes any of the above — a network entitlement, for instance — this page will be updated before that version ships, and the change will be described plainly rather than buried. The date below is the last time anything here changed.
Questions about this policy, or about anything the app does: see the support page.
